One man's pulp is another man's literature

When I first enrolled in this class I had no idea what to expect. My initial thoughts were that it would be an interesting, and even easy class. The class was interesting, but it was not easy. To clarify, I am talking about the lectures only, not the literature.

The literature we studied was, on the other hand, mainly, exceptionally easy to read (with the exception of Los Siete Locos), which was different from the "good" literature class I took, Span 365. This has made me think (though perhaps wrongly so), that "bad" literature can distinguish itself from good literature as being easier to read/comprehend. The books as well were, more or less, interesting to a point; however, upon dissecting them in class, they became less and less interesting as it became apparent that there was little to dissect.

This class was interesting because the concepts challenged my ideas of literature, and covered things that I had never thought about before, such as the idea of the culture and financial marketplace. What I found compelling though, was that the books we read were not necessarily "bad" in the usually accepted way. They were not the pulp fiction that one might find in someones garage sale, but more, books that one would find in a decent bookstore, worthy of buyback. They give promise of being good, but don't completely live up to that promise, as opposed to pulp fiction, which doesn't hide the fact that it is trashy and mass marketed. What I found difficult about this course was that concepts were not so cut and dry and, as a whole, we found it difficult to agree on any one idea. What one person thought made a bad book, another thought made worthy of a good book. The lines of objectivity and subjectivity were blurred and I though I have come to a more substantial definition, I still don't think I truly know what constitutes "bad" literature. I think that subjectivity plays too much into the ideas of good and bad, and though worthy of discussion, these concepts are rarely solidly defined.

Hmmm, the wonderful point of subjectivity that you write about is such a frustrating part of being an Arts student. I as well found that the themes that we discussed and definition of bad literature was very indistinct and vague because of the subjective nature of literature. I understand the concept of the class much more than when I first started the semester, but after hearing one point being contradicted by another point on a fairly consistent basis, a cohesive definition of what is bad literature becomes quite difficult to attain. It is like trying to define what is art(something that we quickly spoke about at the end of one class): it is almost impossible to do.

It's interesting you talk about how when we started dissecting the books there wasn't much to dissect. Darja brought up the good point that perhaps we were being a little biased because are expectations of the book were set lower, plus the valid point that people may gravitate naturally towards the instructors opinion. Very valid points. I was just thinking if the works the opposite for the casual reader in the bookstore. Do they like Allende and Esquivel becuase they think they're supposed to be good authors, and some with some critical acclaim? I think to understand this question you would have to do an indepth, pschological study. In other words, I agree with you that the subjectivity can get very complex.

i completely agree with your analysis of good vs bad as relative to how much we expect of a novel. for me it comes down to the intent of the author and how the book is sold - simple bad books that are guilty pleasures i don't criticize because they are what they are but i am with you in that books like allende's disappointed me because the attention they get give us hope for something better, hence the disappointment when we read one and think, that was it? that is one of the more vibrant, inspiring voices of latin american literature? hmmm

You are right in that to say a book is bad or good is highly subjective However I think that it is possible to back up your subjective analysis with objective criticism and therefore be able to call a book bad. An objective criticism that really caught my attention was that if a book is formulaic it is bad. If a book follows the framework that portains to its genre just to entertain its reader, and doesnt offer anything new to the reader is when Id consider this book bad. But you are totally right, it is very hard to be objective in one's criticisms

i think more than ever getting a definite answer or definition about the bad and the good, what we are slowly learning (in this class for example) is the artful skill of being one's own judge and not simply subscribing to either popular or academic opinion. we know that a definition of what is good and what is bad is neither its popularity or lack thereof. We might not get it right, and there might be no right, but we must try to evaluate a work on our own.
and dave, i think the casual reader in a bookstore waltzes in without direction or purpose, and either asks "what's a good book" or goes to the section of "literature" (the good) and finds esquivel etc.... bookstores are great at setting people's expectations high. And some might feel ashamed if that disagree that the expectations were rigthfully high.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
